9 August 2026. National Day Parade. We got tickets. The kids did not know what NDP was until we told them there would be a parade, some planes, and fireworks. That was the spark.
We parked at Suntec City because we knew the Old Airport Road area would be a jam. The car park was empty by the time we arrived at 4pm. From Suntec we took the MRT Circle Line from Promenade to Stadium. The train was 2 stops. The walk from Stadium MRT to the stadium gates was about 8 minutes.
The kids enjoyed the train ride more than we expected. Loti counted the stops. The MRT was the right call.
The mascot and the Grand Old Dame, before we even got in

We spotted the NDP mascot first. Just outside the entrance. Mei Mei and Loti ran over. The mascot was friendly. The staff was patient. The kids posed for the family photo. It was a 5 minute stop. The kids were hyped before we even lined up.

Right next to the mascot spot, the Grand Old Dame of Kallang display was set up. The huge mural of the old National Stadium (1973 to 2010) is part of the National Stadium heritage trail. The kids did not know the old stadium existed. They posed for photos in front of the mural.
It was a good 15 minute break from the crowd.
The takeaway: the mascot and the Grand Old Dame poster are the move for the family photo. They are right outside the stadium entrance. The kids will remember the old stadium. The mums and dads will remember the concerts and the football matches. The mural is the bridge between the generations.
The queue management, the surprise of the night
![]()
The queue management was the surprise. Long snaking barriers outside the stadium, multiple gates, and a lot of ushers in red shirts directing the crowd. The entry was smooth. The kids did not have to wait long. The staff handled the families with strollers first. The whole entry took maybe 15 minutes from the end of the queue to the seats.
The seats were free seating. We were ushered to the upper tier at Block 308 or thereabouts. The view was wide. The Kallang Stadium held the whole parade. The roof covered the seats. The wind was not a problem. The sun was not a problem. The kids did not have to squint.

The Kallang roar, the only thing the kids remembered

The opening was the Kallang roar. 30,000 plus people shouting Singapore at the top of their lungs. The lights went down. The music came up. The crowd erupted. The kids screamed. The mums and dads screamed. The whole stadium felt like one voice.
That was the moment. The opening roar was the highlight of the evening. The kids still talk about it. They ask when the next NDP is. They want the roar again.
The performances after the roar were honestly mediocre. The performers put in the effort. The choreography was tight. The costumes were bright. But the songs were forgettable. The dance numbers blended together. The kids started asking for snacks after the second number. That is the verdict on the show segment. It was decent. It was not memorable.
The military segment, the part that was missing
The military parade was the part the dads and the uncles look forward to every year. The marching contingents. The bands. The precision. The hardware.
This year it was quite meh. Here is what was missing.
| Segment | What happened | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|
| Red Lions | Did not appear | The parachute jump is the crowd moment. The whole stadium waits for the woohoo |
| Fly past | Did not happen or was blocked | The fighter jets are the other crowd moment. The woohoo that follows the roar of the engines |
| Mobile column | Cancelled | The tanks and the hardware on the road are the visual moment. The roar of the engines on the tarmac |
| Fireworks | Not visible from our seats | The grand finale. The crowd goes silent then erupts |
The kids did not get the woohoo moments. The dads did not get the woohoo moments. The uncles did not get the woohoo moments. The parade felt like a concert with some marching in between.
The marching contingents were tight. The bands played well. The precision was there. But the missing elements are what the crowd pays to see. The Red Lions and the fly past are the wow. The mobile column is the spectacle. The fireworks are the closer. None of those landed at our seats.
The thunder sticks and the exit queue, end of the night

After the show ended, the thunder sticks were still going. The kids kept shaking them. We snapped one more photo before the exit. The Manchester United jerseys and the thunder sticks were a combo we did not expect. The kids looked like mini football fans celebrating NDP.

The exit was as expected. A bottleneck to get to the MRT station. The crowd moved in a slow stream down the stadium stairs. The escalators were jammed. The pavement outside was packed. The MRT entrance queue was 30 minutes long at peak.
We made the call at the bottleneck. We turned around. We went back into the stadium. We took a seat near the exit gate. We waited 15 to 20 minutes. The crowd thinned. We walked out again. The second exit was better. Still slow. Still crowded. But the bottleneck was gone.
The verdict: if you are with kids, do not push through the bottleneck. Go back in. Take a seat. Wait 15 minutes. The MRT queue clears faster than you think. The 15 minute wait beats the 30 minute queue.
The Kallang venue, the sheltered trade off
The Kallang Stadium is a sheltered venue. That is the upside. The weather does not matter. Rain or shine, the show goes on. The kids are not soaked. The parents are not stressed about ponchos. The seats are covered. The wind was not a factor. The sun was not a factor.
But the sheltered venue comes with trade-offs. The view of the sky is limited. The fly past cannot be seen from inside. The fireworks cannot be seen from inside. The Red Lions land outside the stadium. The mobile column drives around the stadium. The grand finale happens outside the stadium.
The Padang venue at the old NDP location did not have the shelter. But it had the sky. The fly past roared overhead. The Red Lions landed in front of the crowd. The mobile column drove past the grandstand. The fireworks exploded over the Marina Bay skyline.
The sheltered venue is the trade. The omph was not there this year.
The verdict
NDP 2026 at Kallang Stadium was a decent evening out. The queue management was excellent. The entry was smooth. The seats were comfortable. The Kallang roar was a moment the kids will remember.
But the parade itself was missing the 4 wow moments. The Red Lions, the fly past, the mobile column, the fireworks. The sheltered venue is the reason. The kids did not get to scream woohoo at the parachute jump. The dads did not get to feel the jet engines overhead. The uncles did not get to watch the tanks roll past.
The verdict for families with young kids. The Kallang venue is the move if the priority is weather protection. The kids stay dry. The kids stay comfortable. The kids get to see the performances on stage. The Kallang roar is the moment. And if the MRT queue is a burst, go back in for 15 minutes. The crowd clears fast.
The verdict for families with older kids and the dads who want the wow. The Padang venue is the move when it comes back. The sky is the show. The military parade is the moment. The fireworks are the closer.
We had a good evening. The kids will ask about the roar for years. We will go again next year. But we will temper expectations on the parade itself. The roar is the moment. The rest is filler.
If you are planning for NDP 2027, get the tickets the moment the ballot opens. The queue management was the best we have seen. The seats are worth the wait. The Kallang roar is worth the crowd. Just do not expect the fly past. The Kallang roof is in the way. And plan for the exit. Take the 15 minute wait over the 30 minute queue. The kids will thank you for it.
