Kids Haircut Singapore: The Honest First Haircut Guide for Parents

Your child is getting their first haircut.

You have two choices. You can walk into the nearest Kcuts, book the $12 – $14 kids haircut slot, and hope for the best.

Or you can spend five minutes reading this first.

I am recommending the second option.

The first haircut matters more than you think. It is not about the cut. It is about whether your child walks out of that salon feeling okay about going back.

A bad first experience can make every future haircut a battle.

A good one means haircuts are easy for the next ten years.

Here is what I learned after two kids and four different salons.

The One Thing That Matters More Than the Salon

Comfort. Not the haircut. Not the price. Not the Instagram backdrop. Comfort.

Your child needs to feel safe in that chair. If they are scared, if they are crying, if they are being held down by a stranger with scissors , that is a bad first haircut. The cut does not matter if the experience breaks them.

I made thssssssssis mistake with my first daughter. I took her to a busy chain salon because it was convenient and the reviews said they did kids haircuts. The hair came out fine. She screamed the entire time. It took six months before she would sit for another one.

With my second daughter, I started with our neighbor’s home salon. It was a $5 haircut in a living room. There was no music playing. There were no other customers. She sat on my lap while the neighbor trimmed her fringe. It was the best $5 I ever spent.

After that, she was ready for a proper salon.

Where to Go for a First Haircut

There are three main options in Singapore. Not all of them are right for a first time.

The Neighbor Home Salon

Often the best first option. Low pressure. Familiar face. No fluorescent lighting. No strangers. No machines beeping. Your child sits on your lap or next to you. The neighbor probably has been cutting hair for decades and has seen every kind of toddler wiggles.

Price: $5 to $10 typically.

Best for: The actual first haircut. Any child who is nervous or going to a salon for the first time.

Kcuts

Kcuts is a specialist kids salon chain. These places are built for kids. They have smaller scissors. They have patience built into the service. They have distractions, usually a screen playing cartoons.

Price: $12 to $14.

Best for: Kids who have had a positive first experience and are ready for a more structured salon visit. Also good as a first option if no home salon is available and your child is generally comfortable with new places.

Book in advance. Ask if they have done kids haircuts for a child your child’s age. Ask how long the appointment typically takes. Rushed slots mean rushed stylists.

The Neighborhood Salon

Your regular hawker centre adjacent salon. The aunty or uncle who has been cutting hair in the same seat for fifteen years. They know what they are doing. They are patient if they choose to be. The price is fair.

Price: $8 to $15.

Best for: Kids who have had a positive first experience and are ready for a less styled environment. The advantage of a neighborhood salon is consistency . You can go back to the same person every time and your child builds familiarity.

The Question to Ask Before You Book

Before you book anywhere, ask this:

“Have you done haircuts for young children before?”

That is it. That is the question.

A salon that does adult hair exclusively may say yes because they want the $15. But a $15 haircut from someone who has never cut a toddler’s hair before is worth exactly nothing. Toddlers do not sit still. They move. They flinch. They suddenly decide they want to look at the ceiling fan right when the scissors are near their ear. If the stylist has not done this before, they do not know how to handle it without making your child miserable.

Ask the question. If the answer is vague, move on.

How to Skip a Bad First Haircut

If the salon has no experience with kids, if they seem rushed before you even sit down, if your child is already showing signs of anxiety and the stylist is not adjusting. Leave. You have not lost anything except a deposit if you paid one.

It is better to reschedule than to force a bad experience. A traumatized first haircut is not worth a $12 price difference.

Some signs you should leave before the cut starts:

  • The stylist talks to your child in a way that suggests impatience
  • They reach for the scissors before your child is settled
  • Your child is already crying and they say “never mind, we do it fast”
  • They want to use the adult cape on a very small child instead of a proper kids cape

The Secret Weapon Every Parent Should Bring

A device with cartoons. Fully charged. With earphones.

You do not need to ask permission. You do not need to feel guilty. A screen is the single most effective tool for keeping a young child still during a haircut. Stylists know this. Some salons have screens built in. Bring your own as backup.

Other things that help:

  • Bring a snack for after the haircut as a reward
  • Schedule the appointment when your child is well-rested, not during nap time
  • Do not cut your child’s hair when they are hungry
  • Explain what is going to happen in simple terms before you go : “the aunty will trim your hair, it will not hurt”

Kids Haircut Prices in Singapore

Here is the honest range you can expect to pay:

  • Home salon or neighbor: $5 to $10
  • Kcuts: $12 to $14
  • Neighborhood salon: $8 to $15
  • Premium kids salon with styling: $25 to $40+

For a first haircut, do not pay more than you need to. The experience matters more than the cut. A $5 neighbor haircut that your child enjoys is worth more than a $25 haircut where they are held down and crying.

Once they are comfortable, you can move up the ladder. A child who enjoys haircuts is a child you can take anywhere.

Skip any salon specialist or otherwise, where the stylist has no patience for a nervous child and tells you it will be “quick.”

There is nothing quick about a first haircut for a two-year-old who has never had scissors near their face. If the stylist cannot see that, they are not the right stylist.

There is also no shame in waiting. If your child is not ready, if they are crying before the scissors come out, it is okay to leave and try again another day. Their hair will still be there. Your relationship with the salon does not need to start with trauma.

Making the First Haircut a Good One

Your job is not to get the cut done. Your job is to make sure your child leaves that salon willing to go back.

That means:

  • Start with a comfortable, low-pressure environment
  • Ask the right questions before you book
  • Bring a screen, a snack, and all the patience you have
  • Leave if it is not working
  • Never force it

The first haircut is not about how straight the fringe is. It is about whether your child learns that going to the salon is not scary.

That is the whole secret. Comfort first, cut second. A child who feels safe in that chair will sit still. A child who sits still gets a better cut. And a child who enjoys the experience will walk back in willingly next time.

Start low pressure. Build from there. Your child will let you know when they are ready for the next level.
