Loti Conquered 6 Climbing Lanes at Climb Central Kallang Wave

We took the kids to Climb Central at Kallang Wave Mall over the weekend. Loti finally got to try rock climbing. Mei Mei was 1kg short.

Here is the math, the meltdown, and the moment Loti finished the last lane.

Loti had been asking to try rock climbing for the longest time. We kept putting it off. The reasons were the 3 rules on the Climb Central pricing page. Age, height, and weight. The kid has to be older than 5 years old. The kid has to be taller than 1 metre. The kid has to be heavier than 16kg.

Loti probably cleared the age and height rules sometime last year. The weight was the hold up. Loti has always been on the lighter side. Then the day before we went, we weighed her at home. 19kg. Over the 16kg line.

Let’s go!

The pricing, what we paid

Climb Central at Kallang Wave Mall is a walk-in gym. No booking needed unless it is a school holiday or weekend peak. The first-time walk-in rates are split into 4 sets.

Set Who Price (SGD) Includes
Set A Adult (18 and above) 38.20 Registration, entry, equipment rental
Set B Youth (age 13 to 17) 32.70 Registration, entry, equipment rental
Set C Adult + 1 Child (age 4 to 12, over 16kg, over 1m tall) 44.70 Registration, entry, 1x free equipment rental for the kid
Set D Adult + 2 Children 72.00 Registration, entry, 2x free equipment rental for the kids

Set C is the one for parents with 1 kid who meets the kid rules. It covers the adult entry and 1 set of rental gear for the kid. The adult does not get gear with Set C.

Set D is the move for 2 kids. 2 sets of gear are included. If both kids meet the 16kg rule.

For the equipment rental add-ons, here is the full equipment rental list at Climb Central Kallang Wave.

Item Price (SGD)
Shoes + Harness Set 9.00
Climbing Shoes 6.00
Climbing Harness 4.10
Rope 12.00
Belay Device 3.20

We went with Set C for Loti. Loti’s gear was free as part of Set C. Mama supervised from the bottom. No extra gear needed for the parent.

The total damage for the day was S$44.70 for 1 adult and 1 kid climbing for 3 hours.

The 16kg rule is the real gate

Here is the lesson for parents. The age and height rules are easy. 5 years old is straightforward. 1 metre is straightforward. Most kids who are 5 will hit 1 metre by the time they are 6.

The weight rule is the tricky one. The Climb Central kid rule used to be 20kg. At some point the gym reduced it to 16kg. We do not know when exactly, but the change made the rule stricter, not easier. The 16kg number is now the gate.

A lot of parents assume it is still 20kg. The harness needs a heavier kid for safety. 16kg is the new threshold.

Mei Mei is 5+. She was 15kg on the day. She needed 1 more kg to join. She watched from the viewing area while Loti climbed.

The meltdown was real. We promised her the next trip. She is going to eat more this month.

The verdict: if your kid is between 14kg and 18kg, weigh them at home the day before.

The S$44.70 entry is wasted if the kid is 15.5kg on the day.

The 15 minute briefing and the first climb

Loti got her harness and shoes. The briefing took 15 minutes. The staff walked through the harness clips, the belay rope, and how to descend. The descend part is the kick and bounce off the wall. Loti looked terrified during the briefing.

We hit the wall. Loti started on the easiest lane. She made it to about 2 metres. Then she froze.

She is known to be afraid to descend. The kick and bounce is not intuitive. You have to lean back, push off the wall, and trust the rope. For a 8 year old, that trust does not exist yet.

She was stuck for 20 minutes. The belay staff tried to coach her down. She held onto the wall. She would not let go. The mums and dads watched from below. The other climbers waited. The queue grew.

After 20 minutes, she finally leaned back. The staff lowered her. She landed. She cried for about 30 seconds. Then she asked to go again.

That was the moment. The fear broke.

The 6 lane climb, the moment she conquered

After the first descent, Loti did 5 more climbs. Each one was a different lane. Each lane is a different colour and difficulty. The lanes at Climb Central go from green (beginner) to black (advanced). She started green and worked her way up.

Climb 2 was green. She made it to the top in 3 minutes. She came down on her own. No fear.

Climb 3 was green. She made it to the top in 2 minutes 30 seconds. She came down faster.

Climb 4 was blue. She made it to the top. The blue lane has small footholds. She had to think about foot placement.

Climb 5 was blue. She made it to the top in about 4 minutes. She was getting tired.

Climb 6 was yellow. The yellow lane is the first lane that has overhangs. She made it to the top. She conquered 6 lanes. She was the only kid in the gym that day who finished all 6.

She came down smiling. The staff clapped. The mums and dads clapped. Mei Mei clapped from the viewing area.

The verdict: the 20 minute meltdown was the price of admission. After that, she owned the wall. 6 lanes in 3 hours. The kid who was afraid to descend finished harder lanes than the teenagers in the gym.

The 3 hour math, is it worth it

We stayed for 3 hours. The entry is unlimited climbs for the day. The 3 hour window is the move. Any shorter and you do not get past the meltdown. Any longer and the arms give out.

The pricing is relative ex for a single session. S$44.70 for 1 adult and 1 kid is on the higher end for an indoor activity in Singapore. The math compared to other options.

Activity 1 adult + 1 kid (3 hours)
Climb Central Kallang Wave (Set C) S$44.70
Trampoline Park (similar duration) S$45 to S$60
Indoor playground (3 hours) S$30 to S$40
Public pool S$3 to S$6

For the price of a trampoline park, the kids get a real skill. Rock climbing uses arms, legs, core, and problem solving. The kids think about the route. They plan the next hold. They figure out the footwork.

The verdict: the pricing is relative ex but the value is real. 3 hours of climbing for S$44.70 is the same price as 1 hour at most enrichment classes. The kids get stronger. The kids get braver. The mums and dads get a coffee.

The accompanying parent move

The accompanying parent rule is the win for the adult. Set C covers the adult entry. The adult does not get gear with Set C. The parent can either stand at the bottom and belay, or top up for the Shoes + Harness Set at S$9.

Without the gear, the parent stands at the bottom and belays. Belaying is holding the rope while the kid climbs. It is a job. It is not climbing. The parent does not get to climb any lanes. It is tiring for the neck to keep looking up.

With the gear, the parent gets shoes and harness. The parent can climb any lane at any time. The parent can spot the kid from the wall.

The parent can race the kid.

The verdict: pay the S$9 if you want to climb. Skip it if you are happy to belay from below.

Both options work. The S$9 is the difference between watching and doing.

What to bring and what to skip

Here is the kit list for Climb Central Kallang Wave based on what worked for us and what did not.

Bring: – Water bottle. The gym does not sell water at the climbing area. The mums and dads got thirsty. – Light snacks. The kids burn energy. A banana or a granola bar between climbs helps. – Hair tie if the kid has long hair. The helmet and harness pull at the hair. – Socks. Climbing shoes are rentals. The kids need socks inside the shoes.

Skip: – Loose jewellery. Rings get caught on the holds. Necklaces bounce around. – Bags. The cubbies are small. The bigger bags do not fit. – Sandals. The kid needs closed toe shoes. The rental shoes count.

The Mei Mei plan

Mei Mei was 15kg on the day. She needs 1 more kg. We are buying more cheese this month. The next trip is booked for when she hits 16kg.

The meltdown on the viewing area was the motivator.

When both kids meet the 16kg rule, the family rate is the move.

Set D covers 2 adults and 2 kids with 2 free gear sets for S$72. The parents can pay the S$9 each for their own gear and climb with the kids. Total: S$72 + 2 x S$9 = S$90 for 4 climbers.

That is S$22.50 per person.

The cheapest activity price on this list.

The verdict: if both kids meet the 16kg rule, the family rate is the move. 4 climbers for S$90 is S$22.50 per person. That is the cheapest way to do Climb Central as a family.

The verdict

Climb Central Kallang Wave is the indoor climbing move for Singapore families with kids past the 16kg line. The pricing is relative ex for a single session but the value is real. The kids get stronger. The kids get braver. The kids learn to descend.

The math: S$44.70 Set C covers 1 adult and 1 kid with the kid’s gear included. 3 hours of unlimited climbing. The meltdown on the first descent is the price of admission. After that, the kids own the wall.
