Wah, you know hor, last time I thought planning a family picnic would be easy, but wow, everything can go wrong if not prepared properly!
Got sunburn, spilled drinks, and even forgot to bring the picnic mat. Alamak, totally chaotic!
After that day, I became smarter, so now I want to share the ultimate checklist for a family picnic with you all.
This way, you can avoid the same mistakes and have a shiok time with your family.
So, let's make sure your next picnic outing is all smooth-sailing and fun!
Pre-Planning
Choosing the Right Location
First things first – where should you have your picnic?
Singapore got so many beautiful spots to choose from! Some of my favourites:
- East Coast Park: Perfect for those beach vibes, lots of space for the kids to run around.
- Botanic Gardens: Super relaxing, lots of shade, good for chilling.
- Sentosa: If you want to be near some fun attractions after the picnic.
- Changi Beach: If you stay in the East and East Coast Park is too far for you.
- Gardens' By the Bay: The open field in between Marina Bay Sands and Gardens By the Bay.
When deciding on the spot, consider:
- Accessibility: Easy to get there by MRT or bus?
- Facilities: Got toilets or BBQ pits nearby?
- Crowd Levels: Some places get packed on weekends, so maybe go early morning or late afternoon.
Check the Weather
Singapore weather, you know lah, can be super unpredictable.
One moment it's sunny, next moment it rains like mad.
Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
The SG Weather app or NEA website quite accurate.
And if it really rains, maybe plan a backup activity like a picnic at home or visit a museum.
I usually use Accuweather and NEA app for my weather forecast.
Packing Essentials
Picnic Basket Must-Haves
Let’s talk about the food – the most important part of any picnic!
- Food Items: Go for simple things like sandwiches, pasta salad, or local snacks like curry puffs and otah. Easy to pack, easy to eat. Old Chang Kee food are really good. Or dabao Zi Char - Fried Rice for the kids.
- Drinks: Confirm need water, but you can also bring something local like bandung or barley water. Coke Zero? Bring a thermal big cup of ice - and some plastic cups to share the drinks around.
If food and drinks are very troublesome - Actually ordering from Mcd will be a good option.
Finger Food, cold drinks - There is bound to have some food for everyone.
Unless you sibei healthy, fried food cannot. Cold drink cannot.
Then it is better you prepare your own food lah.
Utensils and Tableware
Decide if you want to use disposable or reusable items.
- Plates, Cups, Cutlery: Don’t forget the essentials!
- Napkins and Wet Wipes: These will save you when spills happen.
Comfort Items
Make sure everyone’s comfy:
- Picnic Mat: A large one, big enough for everyone.
- Cushions and Foldable Chairs: If you don’t want to sit on the ground the whole time.
- Portable Fans or Umbrellas: You know how hot it can get under the sun.
Safety and First Aid
Always better to be prepared:
- First Aid Kit: Just basic stuff like band-aids and antiseptic.
- Sunscreen and Insect Repellent: Confirm need this, Singapore is hot and humid!
Entertainment and Activities
For the Kids
Kids need to stay entertained, otherwise they’ll get restless:
- Games and Toys: Frisbee, soccer ball, or bubbles. Good for outdoor fun.
- Crafts or Books: If they need some quiet time. Which is quite impossible lah.
For the Adults
Adults also want to have fun, right?
- Kites
- Board Games or Card Games: Something easy to play outdoors. But usually with toddler kids. You have time to chit chat already consider bonus. Half the time have to eye ball them one.
- Bluetooth Speakers: Some music to set the mood.
Family Activities
Everyone can join in the fun!
- Group Games: Try charades or a scavenger hunt. Easy and fun!
- Leisure Activities: Take a walk or snap some family photos. Always good for memories.
Food and Drink Preparation
Preparing Food at Home
Keep it simple and fuss-free:
- Easy Recipes: Sandwiches, pasta, and snacks that you can prep the night before.
- Pre-Packing Tips: Use good containers to keep everything fresh.
Post-Picnic Cleanup
Disposal of Waste
This one confirm important. We must keep our parks clean:
- Bring Trash Bags: Pack enough to sort recyclables and non-recyclables.
- Leave No Trace: Clean up everything before you go. Very important to respect the environment.
Leftover Management
Don’t waste food, okay?
- Pack Leftovers: Bring containers to store whatever’s left.
