Every COE bidding, car dealers run the same promotion.

EV under $180K with COE included. Sounds good until you do the math.

Here is the honest breakdown of two of the most-searched EVs in Singapore right now: Tesla Model Y RWD and BYD Sealion 7 (Dynamic and Premium). I looked at the listed price, the COE cost, the monthly instalment, and what you actually get for each dollar spent.

The Short Version

Three cars. Three price points. One COE category split that could save you thousands. The BYD Sealion 7 comes in two variants (Cat A and Cat B), while the Tesla Model Y RWD is pure Cat A.

What’s Driving the Price Difference?

The BYD Sealion 7 Dynamic is the cheapest entry point at $207,888, and uses Cat A COE. That’s $7,111 less than the Model Y on the listed price. The front-wheel-drive setup and smaller battery mean slightly less power and range, but the difference is marginal for most drivers.

The BYD Sealion 7 Premium at $216,388 is pricier because it uses Cat B COE. You get a bigger battery (82.5kWh), AWD, and more power. But the Cat B COE adds significant COE premium on top of the already higher base price. This variant makes sense only if you do high-mileage driving and need the extra range.

The Tesla Model Y RWD sits in the middle on listed price, but the Cat A COE position is cleaner. Tesla’s brand strength, Supercharger network, and OTA update cadence command a small premium that BYD is still catching up on in Singapore.

Ownership Considerations

COE Risk

This is the wildcard. Both Model Y and Sealion 7 Dynamic are Cat A cars. If COE premiums shift, your effective cost changes. The Cat B Sealion 7 Premium is more exposed since it carries a higher COE cost embedded in the price.

Charging Network

Tesla wins here decisively. The Supercharger network in Singapore is well-established, reliable, and consistently expanding. BYD’s charging support is improving, but for a brand still building its service network in Singapore, it requires more planning. If you do a lot of highway driving, this matters.

Resale Value

Tesla historically holds value better in Singapore’s used EV market. BYD is newer to the market here, so resale data is limited. Factor this into your 5-year total cost calculation.

Interior Tech

Tesla goes all-in on its own OS with no CarPlay or Android Auto. If you’re used to Google’s ecosystem, this is a genuine adjustment. BYD offers wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, which is a real advantage for everyday usability.

Who Should Buy What?

Choose the Tesla Model Y RWD if:

  • You want the established Supercharger network and brand certainty
  • You prioritise software updates and OTA improvements
  • You want the heat pump included for Singapore’s occasional cold snaps
  • You’re okay with Tesla OS and no CarPlay/Android Auto
  • You want historically better resale value

Choose the BYD Sealion 7 Dynamic if:

  • You want the lowest Cat A entry price at $207,888
  • You prefer Android Auto / Apple CarPlay compatibility
  • You’re comfortable with a brand still building its Singapore service network
  • You do mostly city driving and don’t need AWD

Choose the BYD Sealion 7 Premium if:

  • You need maximum range (82.5kWh, ~480km WLTP)
  • You want AWD for occasional highway or wet-weather driving
  • Range anxiety is a genuine concern and you want the buffer

The Verdict

There’s no single winner. The Sealion 7 Dynamic offers the best value at $207,888 with Cat A COE. The Model Y offers brand certainty, a superior charging network, and better resale. The Sealion 7 Premium delivers maximum range but at a Cat B COE premium that only makes sense for high-mileage drivers.

If you are buying to own for 7+ years and charging is convenient for you (home charger, workplace, or nearby public charger), the Sealion 7 Dynamic at $207,888 is the smarter financial call.

If you want the Supercharger network, prefer the Tesla brand experience, and do not mind paying a small premium for peace of mind, the Model Y is still a solid pick.

Do not rush into either.

Test drive both.

Negotiate hard. But usually fixed price one. See what freebies they throw only.

It’s really comparing IPhone to Xiaomi now.
