Visiting Rusutsu during mid-to-late March (16-21st) proved to be a strategic choice for experiencing quality snow without peak season crowds.
The 15-20cm fresh powder on March 17th delivered an exceptional first day of riding, offering that quintessential Hokkaido experience.
However, as my stay concluded on the 21st, the transition to spring conditions became evident with rain appearing - highlighting how late March represents the threshold of Rusutsu's optimal season.
Personal Experience: That first morning after the overnight snowfall was magical.
I remember pulling the curtains wide to wake the kids up.
Loti kept asking, "Is this real snow, Daddy?" – a reminder that growing up in Singapore makes these moments especially precious.
The sound of our boots crunching through fresh powder that morning created memories that justified the entire trip's expense.
Late Season Insight: While March generally offers reliable conditions at Rusutsu, those seeking guaranteed powder should consider booking in January or February, understanding this comes with higher prices and more crowded slopes.
The Vales Accommodation Highlights
The spacious 48sqm apartments offer excellent family-friendly features:
- Open-plan design with separate living and sleeping areas
- Floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning mountain views
- Well-equipped kitchen with cooking essentials
- Comfortable living room perfect for family evenings
- Convenient storage solutions for ski equipment
Where to find a Hotel resort, which has washer and dryer? It makes the washing and drying of clothes so much convenient.
With this, really score near perfect 10/10. Except no bathtub only.
Ski School Experience - Mixed Results
My Rating
The ski school offered a revealing glimpse into both the strengths and limitations of Rusutsu's children's programming:
Strengths:
- Have magic carpet
- Small group sizes allowing personalized attention ( I heard is 1:6 )
Limitations:
- The pricing structure proved prohibitively expensive when our younger child reduced participation
- Service from the instructors was disappointing. She keep emphaizing that Meimei (a first timer) was dragging the class down. She is on a first timer class by the way!!
- Loti was basically going the same slope for the entire 4 days. I did not see much change in techniques; but I do see the improvement in confidence.
- But I also heard they are a better ski school for kids as compared to the rest. They have the magic carpet area.
Family Story: The contrast between our children couldn't have been more stark. Loti took to skiing like a natural, proudly showing us his "pizza stop" technique. This is her 3rd season already. Although we expected more.
Meanwhile, MeiMei's experience highlighted how individual each child's readiness can be. This is her first season.
Understanding that her character, we did a lot of pet talk. Even brought her to take lessons for ski in Singapore at Marina Square.
First day was good for her. She managed to go on her own after the snack break.
After a eventful first day, she bailed out on the 2nd day. We had to reduced her lessons and seek for a refund.
And only to watch her spend most of day 3 & 4 building snow bears at the base rather than skiing. Sigh!
Dining Reality Check
We did not dine out at The Vales. In fact we cooked for 4 out of 5 days. We only comment on the breakfast.
The dining experience at The Vales revealed significant room for improvement:

- Breakfast options were disappointingly limited
- Poor replenishment practices meant 8am arrivals faced depleted selections
- The quality and variety fell below expectations for a premium property
Oktoberfest Restaurant:

- The full breakfast buffet offered substantially better variety
- Freshly toasted croissants were a standout hit with our children
- Though more appealing than The Vales' cafe, still not exceptional for the price point
- Dinner was at 7000JPY.
Meal Memory: Our most memorable meal actually came from an unexpected source. After a particularly exhausting day on the slopes, none of us had energy for a proper restaurant outing. Our friends we raided the local convenience store, bringing back an eclectic assortment of onigiri, instant ramen, and pre-packaged katsu sandwiches, pizza, spaghetti.
We spread our "feast" across the dining table in our Vales apartment, still in our base layers, steam from the ramen fogging the windows as snow fell outside.
The kids declared it the "best picnic ever" – proving sometimes the simplest meals create the strongest memories.
Ski in / Ski Out
Although The Vales Rusutsu is a ski in ski out hotel; But it has its limitations. You can only ski out down to the chairlift, and ski in from the slopes halfway. You are unable to ski back from the chairlift.
For beginners or family with kids, this will be challenging. Especially carrying the gears from the chairlift.
But!!!
You can either drive to the chairlift; It is just a 2 mins drive, or approach the concerige. They do offer shuttle to the hotel near the chairlift.

Activities and Services - Capacity Limitations
My Rating
The disappointing experiences with alternative activities revealed crucial planning considerations:
Children's Facilities:
- The Samurai Kids Park's high price (2,400¥ per person) didn't align with its limited size and offerings
- The nursery's strict capacity limit (19 children) made advance booking essential
- Popular activities like dog sledding required extremely early reservation
Parenting Challenge: The nursery situation created one of those parenting dilemmas you can't fully anticipate. When MeiMei decided skiing wasn't for her, we found ourselves scrambling for alternatives.
The Samurai Kids Park became our fallback option despite its steep price.
Watching her contentedly play there while Loti continued his lessons, I felt that familiar parental mix of relief and frustration – glad she was happy but knowing better planning could have saved both stress and money.
This was especially true when another parent mentioned booking the nursery six months in advance. That information would have been invaluable before our trip!
Comprehensive Assessment
The Vales Rusutsu delivers exceptional accommodation quality and good skiing conditions, particularly for families with committed skiers. However, the experience revealed important considerations for maximizing value:
- Book children's services months in advance, especially nursery spots
- Consider dining expectations and budget for premium options or self-catering
- Evaluate ski school costs realistically, especially for uncertain beginners
- For late March visits, prepare for variable conditions as spring transition begins
On our last evening, we ski back to the hotel from the slopes with Loti. Quickly dismantle our gear as we enquired that it takes 3-4 days to ship our ski bag to the airport. We only have 2 days to ship actually. So we scrambled to find a Ta Q Bin office nearby (30mins away).
That is another story to be told.
Overall, Rusutsu offers tremendous potential for family memories, but each family member's experience can vary dramatically.
The property itself is undeniably impressive, but the true value comes from understanding your family's specific needs and planning accordingly.
With proper preparation and realistic expectations, The Vales Rusutsu can deliver that rare combination of adventure and comfort that makes for exceptional family travel. Just be prepared to manage the occasional gap between premium pricing and service delivery.
