Why I Got the MINDEF Group Insurance: Solid $1 Million Death Coverage at Just Over $300 a Year

By Money Saving Daddy

I want to share about a life insurance policy I recently got :

the MINDEF Group Insurance Core Scheme

If you are eligible, you can enjoy a $1 million death coverage for just around $300 a year. I think this is a pretty good deal, and want to help you understand why.

What Is the MINDEF Group Insurance?

This is a group insurance scheme mainly for servicemen like NSFs, NSmen, and regular servicemen, as well as public officers linked to MINDEF and MHA.

Volunteers in affiliated forces like SCDF and some civilians connected to these ministries can also join.

It used to be called Aviva, if you remember some guy from Mindef come and sales talk us during our NSF days, don't know what $8 a month or something one.

Now it has somehow became Singlife.

Since November 2025, the Core Scheme’s coverage bumped up to S$350,000 for both Group Term Life and Group Personal Injury. But if you want protection beyond that, you can increase your coverage up to S$1 million with the affordable MINDEF Voluntary Scheme.

Who Can Sign Up?

If you fall under any of these groups, you might qualify:

  • NSFs, NSmen, and regular servicemen
  • Public officers working with MINDEF or MHA
  • Volunteers in SCDF and other affiliated forces
  • Eligible civilians working in these ministries or connected organizations

To join, you must be between 16 and 64 years old, a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident, and living in Singapore continuously.

New Feature: Nominate Your Beneficiaries

One recent update allows you to nominate your beneficiaries directly, but this is limited to your parents, spouse, or kids. This ensures the insurance payout goes exactly to the people you care about.

Why This Plan Could Be Your Best Bet

Here are some cool reasons why I think this insurance makes sense:

  • Boost your coverage up to S$1,000,000 starting from as little as $0.17 a day
  • Get the same protection for your spouse and children at the same affordable rates
  • Add extra riders for critical illness, disability, or outpatient medical coverage if you want more peace of mind
  • Fixed premiums that stay the same from when you start till you turn 70 — no sudden increases
  • Enjoy additional savings if you bundle this with other insurance plans like car, home, or travel

What Does the Coverage Include?

Group Term Life

  • $1 million coverage from just S$0.83 per day
  • Full payout if you die or are totally and permanently disabled
  • No medical check needed for coverage up to S$300,000
  • Daily hospital cash benefits included
  • Premiums stay the same till age 65

Group Personal Injury

  • $1 million coverage from only $0.17 per day
  • 150% payout if totally disabled from an accident
  • 24/7 coverage worldwide, including ambulance cost reimbursement
  • Fixed premiums till age 70

How Does It Stack Against FWD and Income?

Final Thoughts

If you qualify, especially if you are a serviceman with a young family, this is a great way to get solid protection without spending too much. The relaxed medical requirements for coverage up to $300,000 and fixed premiums till age 70 make it very practical.

If you want more extras or guaranteed level premiums only till age 65, you might want to check out FWD or Income plans, but they do cost more.

Just to be clear, this is not financial advice. We were just reviewing our policies and I was looking for something affordable. So I revisited this Mindef plan and since I qualify (NSman ah), so why not just take it up.

It is simply a policy I bought and thought would be useful to share.

Hope this helps you get a better picture of your insurance options.
