Don Don Donki: The Return of the Plastic Bags

Don Don Donki (DDDK) is really not your typical supermarket.

If you ask any Singaporean, most of us just go in for fun, walk around, and see what catches our eye. It’s the ultimate impulse buy playground – one moment you’re just “looking-see,” next moment your basket got Japanese snacks, drinks, and some random kitchen gadget you never planned to buy.

Nobody goes there to settle their weekly groceries or buy the usual eggs, bread, and rice.

It’s all about the thrill of discovering something new and shiok.

The Plastic Bag Saga

But ever since they stopped giving out plastic bags and started charging for reusable ones at $1 or $2, the mood changed. Singaporeans, being super practical, really don’t like to spend extra just to get a bag.

Even the 5 cent charge for a plastic bag at supermarkets already makes people grumble. When DDDK removed plastic bags completely, wah, a lot of people just stopped buying extra things on impulse.

No bag, how to carry so many barang barang?

Suddenly everyone became very disciplined – only buy what you can carry or what fits in your own bag.

The days of whacking everything into the iconic Donki bag were gone.

Impulse Buying Takes a Hit

The impact was quite obvious. You could see less people walking out with big hauls.

Some even said they just skipped Donki altogether if they forgot to bring their own bag.

All those spontaneous “just buy lah” moments disappeared. In the end, it hurt Donki’s business. The whole Donki experience is about impulse, but if shoppers have to think twice about how to carry their stuff, they just buy less or don’t buy at all.

The U-Turn: Bags Are Back

Now, Donki made a U-turn and brought back plastic bags – this time, biodegradable ones at 5 cents each.

They say it’s to support customer needs, but honestly, it’s also to bring back the old Donki shopping vibe.

With bags available again, maybe people will go back to their old ways, just grabbing whatever looks interesting without worrying about carrying it home.

Singaporean Style: Still Saving That 5 Cents

At the end of the day, DDDK is never going to be a regular supermarket. It’s a place for fun, random finds, and impulse buys.

But ask Singaporeans to pay extra for a bag? Wah, suddenly everyone becomes very careful with their spending. Now with the bags back, maybe the impulse shopping spirit will return – but don’t be surprised if people still try to squeeze everything into one bag to save that extra 5 cents.

That’s just the Singaporean way!
