The Ultimate Guide to Asahiyama Zoo: A Must-Visit for Animal Lovers

During our trip to Hokkaido - Club Med Kiroro; We have some days of free and easy.

So, Mummy requested to go Asahiyama Zoo to look at the Penguin Parade. Initially, I thought it is just a normal, usual kind of zoo and just travel 3 hours for Penguin Parade is really not worth it.

So here's a guide if you are thinking to visit the zoo.

Asahiyama Zoo is a gem for families and animal enthusiasts alike.

Far from just a place to see animals, it offers visitors a chance to witness creatures from around the world living in beautifully designed enclosures that mimic their natural habitats. 

Hours and Fees for Asahiyama Zoo

Hours

  • Late April to Mid October: Open from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM)
  • Mid October to Early November: Open from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM)
  • Mid November to Early April: Open from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM (last entry at 3:00 PM)

Closed Days

  • April 8 to April 28
  • November 4 to November 10
  • December 30 to January 1

Admission

  • Adults: 1000 yen
  • Kids Below 12 Years Old: Free

Getting There and Around

From Asahikawa Station

  • By Bus: Catch bus number 41, 42, or 47 from Asahikawa Station heading to Asahiyama Zoo. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs 500 yen one way, with around two buses available per hour.
  • By Car: Driving from central Asahikawa to the zoo takes about 30 minutes. If you're considering a taxi, expect to pay between 3000 to 4000 yen for a one-way trip.
  • By Train: The nearest train station to the zoo is Kitahinode Station, which is a 30-40 minute walk to the zoo.

From Asahikawa Airport

  • By Bus: There are a few direct buses from the airport to the zoo, taking about 35 minutes and costing 650 yen one way. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Asahikawa Station first (35 minutes, 750 yen, timed with flight arrivals) and then another bus to the zoo.
  • By Car: A car or taxi ride from Asahikawa Airport to the zoo takes about 25 minutes. Taxi fares range from 3500 to 4500 yen one way.

From Furano

  • By Train: Take the JR Furano Line to Asahikawa (70 minutes, 1290 yen, one train per hour), then hop on a bus from Asahikawa Station to the zoo.
  • By Car: Driving from Furano to the zoo can take about 70-90 minutes.

During the winter months (late December to mid March, the much-loved Penguin Parade at Asahiyama Zoo is scheduled to happen at

  • 11:00 AM - Late December to Mid March
  • 2:30 PM - Late December to End Feburary

However, it's important to remember that this event is subject to weather conditions. Penguins, being quite hardy, still need the right cold temperatures to comfortably waddle outside. If it's too warm or the conditions aren't safe for the penguins, the parade might be postponed or canceled for the day.

  • Check the Weather: Since the parade depends on the weather, it’s a good idea to check the forecast for the day of your visit.
