10 Days Family Adventure in Hokkaido: Club Med Kiroro and Asahiyama Zoo

Last time we went to Club Med Tomamu in Hokkaido, it was super fun.

The snowplay, snowboarding and everything was so nice until we all didn't want to come back home.

Plus, the people there were so friendly, making us feel right at home.

So, we thought, why not do it again?

But this time, we wanted to explore more of Hokkaido, not just stick to one place.

There is so much more to see – from the cool slopes of Club Med Kiroro to the cute town of Otaru, and even the Asahiyama Zoo.

My boss requested for Asahiyama Zoo - especially the Penguin parade.

Day 0: Touchdown and First Impressions

Just Arrived in Hokkaido!

We landed in Hokkaido feeling a mix of excitement and a little jet shag, but mostly, we were ready to dive into our winter adventure.

The crisp, cool air was a refreshing welcome as we stepped out of the airport. We brought the kids out in the cold to experience the weather.

Car Pick-Up at Times Rental

Our first stop was Times Rental to pick up our rental car. The process was smooth, and the staff made sure we were all set with a car equipped for the snowy roads ahead.

It felt like we were gearing up for a road trip movie, Hokkaido edition.

Scenic Drive to Club Med Kiroro

The drive from Chitose to Club Med Kiroro was nothing short of magical. With every turn, the snowy landscapes seemed to wrap around us, setting the perfect backdrop for our family adventure.

The kids were glued to the windows, captivated by the winter wonderland outside.

Pit Stop at Mitsui Outlet Park

We made a quick stop at Mitsui Outlet Park for lunch and to grab some last-minute essentials.

It was a great spot to stretch our legs, enjoy some good food, and pick up anything we might have forgotten.

Plus, a little shopping never hurts, right?

Gear Up at Kiroro Mountain Center

Arriving at Kiroro, we headed straight for the Mountain Center to rent our skiing and snowboarding gear.

The staff were super helpful, ensuring we all got the right fit. Initially we thought that the gear rental at Mountain Center was significantly cheaper.

But it's probably just 10% cheaper than the one at Club Med. If it is just 10%, it is more convenient to rent from Club Med, you pay by per day and if you don't feel like doing ski/snowboard the next day, you can return it and will not be charged.

In fact, the rental shop beside Club Med Tomamu was cheaper like 30-40%.

Warm Welcome at Club Med

Check-in at Club Med was like walking into a warm hug. We parked the car outside Club Med and it is free. It is only payable if it is an indoor parking.

The place buzzed with energy and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Our rooms were cozy and huge, seems like 2 x super single combined and 2 sofa beds.

So I slept on 1 of the sofa bed and kids and Mummy sleep on the huge bed.

Lesson Registrations

Signing up for snowboarding and ski lessons brought a mix of nerves and excitement.

I went for SB 2 and Mummy went for SB 1 to refresh abit.

The kids were eager to start—Loti with her ski lessons and MeiMei looking forward to the Petit Club.

It was the beginning of what promised to be an unforgettable adventure.

Days 1-5: Embracing the Hokkaido Winter

Breakfast at Club Med

Starting each day with a hearty breakfast at Club Med quickly became a family favorite.

The wide array of options, from local Japanese dishes to familiar Western breakfasts, ensured we all started our day on a full stomach, ready for the adventures ahead.

My favorite is still the sunny side up + Croissant + Cripsy Hasbrown.

Ski and Snowboard Lessons Begin

The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as we all embarked on our respective lessons.

The kids, Loti and MeiMei, eagerly joined their groups, ready to learn and play in the snow.

Loti's Ski Adventures

Loti took to skiing like a fish to water. Her progress was remarkable, and she would update us with her daily slope stories, her eyes shining with the thrill of each descent.

She progressed from Dragon to Trident one.

These are their levels.

  • Tiger/Panda - Young Beginner
  • Dragon - Beginner
  • Trident 1 / 2 / 3 /Bronze / Gold

MeiMei's Petit Club Fun

MeiMei's days were filled with joy at the Petit Club, where she engaged in fun activities tailored for little ones.

Her stories of new friends and games added a lovely dose of warmth to our evenings. There are days she resist going to the Petit Club. Some days, she enjoyed the Petit Club.

The beauty of Club Med is in fact, they keep your kids occupied while you focus on your day snowboarding and out on the Slopes.

Adults Hit the Slopes

For us, the adults, snowboarding lessons were a thrilling challenge.

Each day, we grew more confident on our boards, cherishing the falls and triumphs alike.

I was brought up the Red and Blacks Slopes while Mummy conquered the Green Slopes.

Club Med Lunches

Our midday meals became precious moments of reunion, where we shared the morning's tales of triumphs and tumbles.

These lunches were a delightful break, filled with laughter and delicious food.

Best of all, Club Med will bring the kids for lunch while the adults can get their sanity back for that moment.

Afternoon Lessons and More Fun

Post-lunch, we returned to our lessons, eager to build on the morning's progress.

The highlight of our afternoons was picking up the kids and hearing all about their adventures and learning.

Evening Activities at Club Med

The evenings at Club Med were a time for relaxation and entertainment.

From talent shows to medal awards, each activity allowed us to unwind and revel in the joy of our shared experiences, ending each day on a high note.

Day 6: Otaru and Journey to Asahikawa

Change of Plans Due to Weather

The day began with a bit of a twist—our planned gondola ride to the peak was canceled due to gale warnings. Instead of letting it dampen our spirits, we took it as an opportunity to explore new grounds.

So, off to Otaru we went!

Discovering Otaru

Otaru, with its quaint canals and charming streets, was a delightful detour. It's only 30 mins drive from Club Med Kiroro. In fact, we will pass by Otaru on our way to Asahikawa.

Our lunch at the Hello Kitty Cafe was a hit, especially with MeiMei and Loti. The cafe's cute interior and themed dishes made for a memorable meal.

Afterwards, we indulged in some pastries shopping at Le Tao Cafe, renowned for its creamy, decadent delights.

And although it really tastes fantastic; The pricing is also fantastic too. We spend like 7000 Yen for all the cookies.

Expensive sia!

Drive to Asahikawa

  • Distance: 170+ km
  • Time Taken: 2.5 Hrs

Post-Otaru, we set our sights on Asahikawa with the aim of visiting the Asahiyama Zoo the next day.

The drive was scenic and peaceful, offering a chance to see more of Hokkaido's beautiful landscapes.

The anticipation for the zoo visit added an extra layer of excitement to our journey.

Check-In at Hotel Amanek

Reaching Asahikawa, we checked into our hotel, Amanek Hotel.

The place was cozy and welcoming – just what we needed after a day of adventures.

Checking in was a breeze, the lobby is at level 3 and there is direct access to the Hotel from the carpark at level 3.

Overnight parking is only 1000 yen!

A Warm Bowl of Ramen

We decided to cap off our day with dinner at Hokkaido Ramen Santouka.

The warmth and richness of the ramen were just what we needed after a day of adventure and travel.

It was comforting, delicious, and a perfect introduction to Asahikawa's ramen scene. It seems like it is our first Ramen since we arrive in Hokkaido.

Day 7: Asahiyama Zoo Day and Shopping Spree

Morning at Asahiyama Zoo

The day began with excitement as we headed to Asahiyama Zoo, renowned for its unique animal encounters and engaging exhibits.

The highlight for all of us was definitely the Penguin Parade, watching those adorable creatures waddle through the snow.

The zoo offered us a chance to see a wide range of animals in environments designed to mimic their natural habitats.

From the majestic polar bears to the playful seals and big cats, every moment was filled with wonder and joy.

Entrance Fares:

  • Adult - 1000 Yen
  • Kids - Free!

Lunch at the Zoo

After a morning of exploration and awe, we enjoyed a simple yet satisfying lunch at the zoo.

It was nice to take a moment to relax, refuel, and reflect on all the incredible sights we seen.

The zoo's atmosphere added a special touch to our meal, surrounded by the sounds and sights of nature.

We had our lunch at around 2.30pm; Definitely a good time as the lunch crowd has subsided.

Shopping at Supersports and Sports Depot

Following our zoo visit, we embarked on a shopping expedition to Supersports and Sports Depot.

With the earlier snow adventures still fresh in our minds, we were on the hunt for snowboarding gear.

The selection of goggles, ski jackets, and other essentials was not that impressive. But it also gives us an idea how much the price comparison was.

But to top it off, we get the tax refund if we buy it there.

Dinner at Sushiro

After our shopping for snowboard gear, we were ready to tuck into some serious makan.

We have been to Sushiro in Taiwan and Bangkok, and the kids always have a blast there.

So, finding one in Hokkaido was like stumbling upon a hidden gem that wasn't really hidden.

Sushiro in Hokkaido didn't disappoint. The vibe was just as lively and welcoming as we remembered.

For those who haven't been, Sushiro is this cool conveyor belt sushi spot where you can pick what you like as it goes by your table. And if you want something special, just order it from the screen at your table, and it zooms right to you.

The kids went straight for their favorites – corn sushi and Tamago Sushi.

They were having a ball, trying to grab their picks from the conveyor belt. It's not just about eating; it's like a mini adventure for them.

For us adults, we dived into some of Hokkaido's specialties like the fresh sea urchin sushi and scallop nigiri.

Shiok!

And our usually meal in Singapore would cost $60+. Today it is around $40+!

Day 8: Return to Chitose and Relaxing Evening

Journey Back to Chitose

The morning of Day 8 marked our drive back to the Chitose/Sapporo area, signaling the winding down of our Hokkaido adventure.

The drive back was filled with conversations about our favorite moments so far, from the slopes of Kiroro to the streets of Otaru and the animals at Asahiyama Zoo.

It was a bittersweet ride, knowing our trip was nearing its end, but also feeling grateful for all the experiences we had enjoyed together.

Shopping at Mitsui Outlet Park

Upon arriving in Chitose/Sapporo, we couldn't resist the opportunity for shopping spree at Mitsui Outlet Park.

This place had become a favorite stop of ours, offering a wide range of shopping options from souvenirs and local specialties to brand-name goods.

The kids had a blast choosing toys. For us, we bought our googles since the pricing is good.

Checking into Sakura93 Apartment

Our stay for the night was at Sakura93 Apartment, a cozy and welcoming place that felt like a home away from home.

After the hustle and bustle of our trip, the apartment offered a peaceful retreat where we could relax and enjoy each other's company in comfort.

Checking in was smooth, and we were all impressed by the apartment's charm. It was pretty cold when we check in so we have to turn up the heater and warmer.

It was the perfect spot to rest and recharge for our last day in Hokkaido. This place was in between the outlet mall and Sapporo city.

So at least it is nearer to get to the Airport.

Takeaway Dinner from McDonald's

For dinner, we decided to keep things simple with a takeaway meal from McDonald's.

It was a familiar comfort after days of trying new foods and dining out.

Plus, it was interesting to compare the local menu items to what we were used to back home.

The kids enjoyed their favorites, while we adults found ourselves indulging in some of the unique offerings only found in Japan.

Eating our meal together in the apartment, we shared stories, laughs, and plans for our final day in Hokkaido.

Day 9: Snow Sled Fun and Yakiniku Dinner

A Leisurely Start

After several days packed with activities, Day 9 began with a rare luxury for us—sleeping in.

The cozy comforts of Sakura93 Apartment and the knowledge that our adventure was drawing to a close allowed us to take a slower start to the day.

It was a much-needed rest, recharging us for the day’s lighter but equally enjoyable itinerary.

Snow Sled Play at TAKINO SNOW WORLD

By mid-morning, we were ready for some snow fun and made our way to TAKINO SNOW WORLD.

This place was a winter playground, offering free snow sled play that appealed to both the kids and us adults.

The laughter and exhilaration of racing down the snow in sleds brought out the child in everyone.

The atmosphere was filled with joy, and the crisp air heightened the sense of adventure and play.

It was a simple yet unforgettable experience, capturing the essence of winter fun in Hokkaido.

Dinner at Yakiniku King

For dinner, we decided to indulge in something uniquely Japanese—Yakiniku.

Yakiniku King offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for our family dinner.

Cooking the meat at our table was not only a delicious experience but also a fun and interactive one.

Each bite of the savory grilled meats was a delight, and the variety of side dishes complemented the meal perfectly.

It was a culinary adventure, exploring different flavors and cooking techniques, all while enjoying each other's company.

Best of all, Kids eat for Free!

Buffet Meal Price:

  • Adults: 3500+ Yen Per Pax
  • Drinks: 400+ Yen Per Pax

More Shopping at SuperSports

Before heading back to our apartment, we made a stop at SuperSports.

With our trip coming to an end, it was an opportunity to pick up any last-minute souvenirs and perhaps some sporting goods inspired by our snow adventures.

The store had a great selection, from professional snowboarding gear to casual sportswear.

It was nice to browse through the aisles, each of us finding something that caught our eye or reminded us of our time in Hokkaido.

However, I didn't manage to get any Snowboard boots to my liking.

Hence, there is probably somemore shopping in the near future.

Day 10: Departure and Reflections

Returning the Rental Car

Our final day in Hokkaido started with a trip back to Times Rental to return our trusty rental car.

This car had been with us through every leg of our journey, from the snowy mountains of Kiroro to the charming streets of Otaru.

Returning it felt like closing a chapter on an incredible adventure.

The staff at Times Rental were as friendly and helpful as they had been on Day 0, making the process smooth and bittersweet.

Regular Petrol Pricing

  • 161 Yen to 178 Yen per Litre

Transit to Haneda

With our bags packed and spirits high from the memories we'd created, we headed to Chitose for our transit flight to Haneda.

This time round was a good rush.

We only had 1 hour to transit.

The good thing is we do not need to claim our baggage to bring it along for the international flight.

Journey Back to Singapore

The flight from Haneda to Singapore marked the end of our Hokkaido adventure.

As we flew home, each of us was lost in thought, reliving the moments that had made our trip so special.

From the thrill of skiing and snowboarding to the beauty of the Asahiyama Zoo and the fun of our shopping sprees, every experience had brought us closer and added to our family's tapestry of memories.

Looking Forward

As we collected our bags and made our way through the airport, our conversations turned to the future.

Where would our next family adventure take us? We could be still heading to Club Med Kiroro given the very positive experience.

Stay tune!
