Navigating Bangkok with Kids: A Guide to Family-Friendly Transportation

We were travelled to Bangkok previously for 7 days. During this 7 days, we encounter a few tourist trap especially transportation.

This guide dives deep into how to travel Bangkok efficiently while avoiding common tourist traps.

Overpriced Tuk-Tuk Rides

Tuk-tuks offer an open-air ride experience through Bangkok's streets, but they are also known for tourist-targeted price hikes.

Agree on a Price Beforehand

Initiate your journey by agreeing on a fare to avoid unexpected costs. Knowing the average price for your destination can give you a solid bargaining foundation. Don't hesitate to negotiate to a fair price, as it's a common practice.

Use Ride-Hailing Apps

For a more straightforward approach, utilize ride-hailing apps that provide a tuk-tuk option. These apps offer a fixed fare, eliminating the need for negotiation and providing a safer, more predictable pricing structure.

Unmetered Taxi Rides

Taxis in Bangkok are plentiful and air-conditioned, offering a respite from the heat. However, some drivers may attempt to bypass the meter for a higher fare.

Insist on the Meter

Upon entering the taxi, ensure the meter is turned on. If the driver refuses, it's within your rights to wait for another taxi. This insistence helps avoid overpaying for your ride.

Use Taxi Apps

Booking a taxi through an app guarantees metered fares and provides additional security by detailing the driver's information and tracking your route.

Scamming Tour Operators

Bangkok's allure includes countless tours to historical and cultural sites. However, some operators may exploit tourists with overpriced transportation fees.

Do Your Research

Choose tour operators with a solid reputation, supported by positive reviews from fellow travelers. This research can safeguard you from scams and ensure a quality experience.

Public Transport Options

Leverage Bangkok's efficient public transportation to access attractions. The BTS Skytrain and MRT offer extensive coverage of the city, providing a reliable and affordable alternative to private tours.

Longboat River Cruises at Inflated Prices

A longboat river cruise is a quintessential Bangkok experience. However, private family tours can come with a hefty price tag.

Compare Prices

Before booking, compare prices across different operators and platforms to ensure you're getting a fair deal. This comparison can lead to significant savings.

Public River Transport

Consider the public river ferry for a genuine and budget-friendly alternative. It offers the same scenic views at a fraction of the cost, allowing you to experience the beauty of Bangkok's waterways without the inflated price.

BTS Skytrain and MRT Overcrowding

The BTS Skytrain and MRT are efficient but can be crowded, especially during peak hours, making it challenging for families.

Travel Off-Peak

Traveling during off-peak hours ensures a more comfortable and manageable experience. Planning your day around these times can make your journey smoother.

Prepare for the Experience

If traveling during peak times is unavoidable, prepare by securing your belongings and keeping your family together. Opt for baby carriers over strollers to navigate the crowds more easily.

River Market Boat Tour

Exploring Bangkok's floating markets is a unique experience, offering insight into the local lifestyle. However, it's important to navigate this experience wisely to avoid overpriced tours.

Choose the Right Tour

Select a tour that caters to families and comes highly recommended by other travelers. Look for options that provide a balance of cost and experience, ensuring you get the most value for your money.

Local Operators

Booking directly with local operators often results in better prices and more authentic experiences. This direct approach can also allow for more personalization of your tour.

Know the Costs

Understanding what's included in the tour price and what might cost extra can prevent unexpected expenses.

Clarify these details beforehand to budget accordingly.

A typical boat ride should cost less than 300 Baht per pax. Even for the entire private boat + canal tour, it should cost 2000 baht or less.

The drivers that send you to the boat tour operators are affiliated and get some fees for sending tourist there.

We were actually told that cars cannot get in the area and you need to use a long tail boat to get in.

They quoted us 2000 - 3000 Baht per boat, which was quite "reasonable".

If you are in doubt, just book from Klook

Timing is Everything

Opt for early morning tours to avoid the crowds and the heat, making the experience more enjoyable for the whole family. This timing also often coincides with the most vibrant market activities.

Navigating Bangkok with your family doesn't have to be a daunting task.

With these tips and insights, you can explore the city's wonders efficiently, avoiding common tourist traps and making the most of your adventure.
