Snow, Sushi, and Snowboarding: 6-Day Hokkaido Adventure with Clubmed Tomamu

We heard so much about the unique experiences Club Med offers. From snow adventures tailored for both kids and adults to luxury stays and yummy delights, it seemed like the perfect family getaway.

So this time, we booked Tomamu Club Med in March! We actually missed the booking in December. It was a good deal actually!

Given that it is our first winter trip since covid. We are so excited about it!

Lots of preparation and trips to decathlon, uniqlo...

Day 0: 13th March - Navigating the Unexpected

The Night Before

The evening before our departure was filled with the usual pre-trip excitement and last-minute packing.

Ensuring we had everything from our heat tech to Loti and Sushi's favorite toys. Somehow, we felt a mix of anticipation and the usual pre-travel jitters. Scare that we forget something.

Pre-Departure Excitement

Even with the evening flight, the kids, though sleepy, were buzzing with the thrill of the journey ahead.

Their backpacks, were packed with snacks and in-flight activities.

A Bump at Singapore Airport

Upon arriving at Changi airport, we were eager to check in and start our journey.

However, we discovered that when booking under Club Med, seat selection wasn't an option.

The seats were pre-assigned, and to our dismay, web check-in was unavailable. We cannot even choose our in-flight meal. Especially for kids. We would want to know what options can they have.

This was quite a cheese pie.

We had hoped to get seats together, especially with the kids.

The staff, though helpful, informed us that the pre-assigned seating was a policy when booking through certain packages with Club Med.

Pro Tip: When booking through travel packages or third-party agencies, always double-check the fine print regarding seat assignments and check-in procedures. It can save a lot of last-minute stress.

Making the Best of It

Despite the initial setback, we decided not to let it dampen our spirits.

We managed to get seats relatively close to each other.

The Flight to HND

Flight Time: 7 Hours

The flight to Haneda Airport (HND) went smoother than expected.

Loti and Sushi, engrossed in their movies and games, seemed unfazed by the earlier hiccup.

Transit at HND to Obhiro

Layover Time: 5 Hours

Flight Time: 100 minutes

After arriving at HND, passengers usually have a layover before catching a domestic flight to Obhiro.

Arriving at HND for our transit to Obhiro, we stretched our legs, explored a bit, and treated ourselves to some local snacks. Layover was 5 hours also due to another hiccup prior. The flight has been re-schedule 2 months before our trip.

Day 1: 14th March - A Warm Welcome in Chilly Hokkaido

Club Med Tomamu is located in the Tomamu region of Hokkaido.

From Obihiro Airport to Club Med Tomamu, the distance is approximately 90 kilometers (about 56 miles).

If you're traveling by car or taxi, the journey typically takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the road conditions, especially during winter when snow can affect travel times.

Touchdown and First Impressions

As we touched down in Hokkaido, the cold air greeted us like an old friend. It was a refreshing change from Singapore's warm weather.

Club Med's crew was there to welcome us, holding up signs and smiling warmly.

They escorted us to a cozy bus that took us to the resort.

The drive was scenic, with snow-covered landscapes that looked like they were straight out of a postcard. The kids pressed their faces against the windows, sibei excited.

Their eyes wide with wonder.

The Cozy Main Hall and Tea Time

Upon arrival, we were led to the main lobby, where the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement from other families and travelers.

The lobby was decorated with wooden accents and warm lighting, giving it a cozy, rustic feel.

We were offered warm tea and light snacks, a perfect way to settle in.

There was a briefing by the Chief Eric (The Manager of the Resort).

We were later ushered to our room by the staff. Each room has a staff assigned and they attended to our enquiries. Showing us along the way.

Gear Rental at Hoshino Resort Center

Prior the trip, we googled and found out the rentals was much expensive at the resort. There was probably a cheaper option some distance away.

A quick shuttle took us to Hoshino Resort Center.

The place was well-organized, with rows of snowboards, boots, and winter apparel.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the rental prices were about 50% cheaper than those at Club Med.

A family has to save where a family can, right? Hehe..

Snowboarding Lessons and Daycare Plans

Back at Club Med, we headed straight to the activities desk to sign up for snowboarding lessons.

The process was straightforward.

They had slots for different skill levels, and we chose the beginners' class, considering it has been some time since.

Loti was excited but a bit nervous.

Petit Club Med

As for Sushi, she was too young for the snowboarding lessons.

But no worries! Club Med had a daycare center that was amazing.

For USD80 a day, they promised a day filled with fun activities for the little ones.

We signed her up, feeling assured that she would have a great time.

Pro Tip: When signing up for activities, do it as early as possible to get your preferred slots. Also, the daycare center is a fantastic option for younger kids.

Make sure to check it out!

Dinner at Day 1

We headed for dinner at their main hall. There was a huge variety of options. From steak to seafood.

Not forgetting Sushi and Ramen as well.

Day 2: 15th March - The Snowboarding Saga Begins

Breakfast

Breakfast at Tomamu Club Med was simple but the croissant is my favorite! The buttery fragrance, the crispy crust.

Really Yummy leh!

Kids Snowboard Lesson with Club Med

Loti was enrolled in the kids' snowboard lesson, and she was grouped with other children around her age and level.

The instructors were patient, guiding the kids through wear the ski gears.

It was heartwarming to see Loti slowly get the hang of it.

She started with small steps and eventually moved on to gliding.

Her face lit up each time she managed to stay upright, and that was a victory in itself.

Sushi's Daycare Adventure

Meanwhile, Sushi was having her own set of adventures at Clubmed's daycare center.

The facility was well-equipped, with a variety of toys and activities to keep the little ones engaged.

They had arts and crafts, storytelling sessions, and even a small indoor play area. It was comforting to know that while we were out snowboarding, Sushi was in a safe and fun environment.

Hitting the Slopes

The morning air was crisp and invigorating as we made our way to the snowboarding area. As usual, we were late as we were busy taking pictures of Sushi and Loti. We rushed to the area where the beginners are.

Luckily we did not miss much as they were doing their warm up.

Tomamu's snow mountains were a sight to behold, blanketed in a thick layer of white snow. We hoped the snow is puffy and soft.

Day Lessons are usually 9am to 11.30am.

Assembly at 9am and lesson start at 9.30 to 11.30am.

Then break for lunch.

Afternoon lessons are 1.30pm to 4pm.

Assemble at 1.30pm and lessons start at 2pm.

A Culinary Experience: Full on board

After an exhausting yet exhilarating morning, we headed back to Club Med for lunch.

The dining area was spacious and inviting, with an array of international and local dishes.

What caught our attention was that the menu changed daily, offering a culinary experience that never got boring.

From sushi to pasta to local Hokkaido delicacies, it was a feast that satisfied our hunger and our taste buds.

Pro Tip: Don't skip the local dishes; they're authentically delicious and offer a taste of Hokkaido's rich culinary culture.

Day 3: 16th March - Progress and Playtime

Loti Progress

As Loti was tired on Day 2. She took a nap during the afternoon lesson. So she did not progress to the next level. In short, she was retained! lol.

Sushi's Daycare Diaries Continue

Sushi was becoming a little celebrity at the daycare center. The caregivers told us she was enjoying the puppet shows and had even made a couple of friends.

Knowing she was having a great time and was well taken care of eased our minds and allowed us to fully enjoy our snowboarding sessions.

Snowboarding: Leveling Up

We were no longer newbies on the slopes, and that felt good.

The instructors rotated, giving us a fresh perspective on techniques and styles.

Today's focus was on control and balance.

I could feel myself getting more comfortable, navigating the slopes with a bit more flair.

Instructors Make the Difference

What stood out was how each instructor brought their own teaching style to the table.

They were all well-trained but unique in their approach.

This rotation system kept the learning experience fresh and engaging. It was like unwrapping a new gift every day, never knowing what new trick or tip we'd learn next.

Evening Programs: More than Just Snow

Actually, Club Med isn't just about daytime activities; the evenings are equally exciting. T

hey had a range of programs from live music to magic shows.

The kids were captivated, and so were we.

It was a perfect way to unwind and relax after a day of physical activity.

A Dip in the Onsen

We also decided to visit the Onsen, a traditional Japanese hot spring.

The warm, mineral-rich water was therapeutic, to say the least.

It was a cultural experience that also served to soothe our sore muscles. Imaging outdoor onsen in the snow.

Amazing right?

Pro Tip: If you're new to the Onsen experience, make sure to read up on the etiquette. It's a must-try but it's also important to respect the local customs.

Day 4: 17th March - Mastering the Slopes and More

Snowboarding: The Learning Curve

By Day 4, the slopes felt like a second home. The initial jitters had given way to a sense of confidence. However my wife got retained at SB2. She could not progress much and decided to practise more at that level.

So, for myself. I am tackling slopes that were a bit more challenging, and the thrill was indescribable.

The Mountains of Tomamu

The snow mountains of Tomamu deserve a special mention.

They're not just slopes but a canvas of nature's art.

The varying difficulties offer something for everyone, from the cautious first-timer to the daring expert. The snow quality is excellent, making for a smooth ride down the slopes.

Evening Entertainment and Wave Pool

The evening had a different vibe today. Club Med organized a circus perforamnce, and it was a hit with both kids and adults.

After the show, we decided to check out the wave pool. It was a fun change of pace from the snow and slopes. The kids had a blast, and so did we!

Pro Tip: Don't miss out on the wave pool. It's a fantastic way to relax and have some non-snowy fun. Just remember to follow the pool rules for everyone's safety.

Day 5: 18th March - A Day of Reflection and Memories

Half-Day on the Slopes

Day 5 was a bit different; we decided to spend only half the day on the slopes.

The morning was filled with the usual excitement, but there was also a sense of nostalgia. We knew our snowboarding adventure was nearing its end, and we wanted to make the most of it. I took the opportunity to capture some videos of Loti as she navigated the slopes with newfound confidence.

Capturing Moments

While I was busy with the camera, my wife took over the reins of capturing candid shots of Sushi at the daycare center.

She was engrossed in a coloring activity, her tiny hands diligently filling in the lines. These were the moments we wanted to remember, the simple yet profound joys of family life.

The Secret Dinner : Haku

Haku is Tomamu Club Med Resort's gem, offering authentic Japanese yakiniku dishes. With a setting inspired by traditional Japanese designs, it's more than just a meal; it's an experience.

You need to camp for the fastest finger in order to make a booking at the restaurant.

The basic menu option is included but you need to pay extra for their Premium menu option.

Being the Money Saving Daddy, of course is the basic lah!

Day 6: 19th March - The Grand Finale: Mountains, Scenery, and Goodbyes

A Scenic Adventure

The last day had arrived, and we were determined to make it unforgettable.

We took a special trip up the mountains, not for snowboarding this time, but to simply soak in the majestic scenery.

The gondola ride up was an experience in itself, offering panoramic views of the snow-covered landscape.

The kids were glued to the windows super awed by the scenery.

On Top of the World

Once we reached the peak, the view was nothing short of breathtaking.

We felt like we were on top of the world, surrounded by endless stretches of snow and sky.

Loti and Sushi were equally amazed, their faces flushed from the cold and excitement.

We took some family photos, capturing the moment when we stood together, high above the world.

Packing and Preparing to Leave

The afternoon was spent packing and saying our goodbyes to the wonderful staff and the friends we had made. It was a bittersweet moment, filled with hugs and promises to return.

Pro Tip: Always double-check your belongings before leaving. In the rush of farewells, it's easy to forget small but important items.

Farewell

If you think we are ending here.

No!

The farewell is amazing! There are staffs greeting and waving us good bye!

Made alot of Friends

We came with a group of family and left the resort of 2 more groups of family! Made a few friends during this trip!

It is really an amazing experience and in fact, we have already booked for the next trip to Kiroro Club Med the next year!

Stay tuned!
